One day a couple, “Rhonda” and “Dave” walked into HOPE’s Resource Center, scared and looking for help. They had come to Florida for a job but had spent all their money moving and waiting to start the job. The new job was good, but they needed time to start getting paychecks to resolve other issues. They were living out of their car but even the car registration wasn’t current, so they were afraid of getting fined as well.
Rhonda and Dave met with a case manager who worked with them to complete a personalized case plan and provided them with food and toiletries. Rhonda had some chronic medical issues and needed advice on how to meet those needs until they were more financially stable. HOPE shared with her resources on a sliding scale, or free medical and pharmacy options. With the weather turning colder they were running the gas in their car to stay warm. They were afraid of running out of gas before payday. HOPE was able to provide them with a gas card to get them through to payday.
They also wanted information on where to go and how to get their car properly registered. HOPE was able to discuss a few locations and options, as well as look up costs and laws to guide them. The joy and relief on their faces was palpable when they walked in one day stating that they had been able to get the car registration issues solved and even paid for a couple days in a hotel to get better rest and refreshed. HOPE has continued to follow them to support them as they are getting their new life established and connecting them with resource agencies in Central Florida. Dave’s job has been supportive, Rhonda’s health is doing better. Now, HOPE is helping them look for housing and they are working with our Financial Literacy program to become eligible for deposit assistance.
Sometimes HOPE’s biggest impact is not with our food or financial assistance, but just our listening ear and encouragement as families who are struggling look for wisdom and support. HOPE is happy to be cheering for Rhonda and Dave and all the others who walk through our doors.
