Building a Financial Future

Building a Financial Future
One of the families that HOPE has been assisting over the past year is Martin and Aria, who have two young children, ages 5 and 1. The family started a new life in the U.S. after leaving unsafe living conditions in the UAE a few years ago. Aria provides childcare for the children while Martin works full time.
As a family of four living off one income, things can be tight, so they began coming to the pantry to save on their grocery bills in order to be able to pay rent and utilities. HOPE has also assisted them with toiletries and diapers from time to time, the cost of which can quickly add up. Additionally, HOPE was able to connect Aria with a free English language class to improve her English skills for when she returns to work. The family also benefitted from last year’s Christmas in the City event where they were able to get toys for their children.
After participating in financial counseling, Martin and the volunteer financial counselor were able to identify areas where the family could cut back expenses and start saving a small amount each week in order to build up an emergency fund. Their ultimate dream is to be homeowners and once they have the emergency fund, then they can start saving for a down payment on a home. With continued participation in financial counseling, this family will eventually no longer need HOPE’s services.
